What guides our school library? What are the guidelines? How do we create a library curriculum that can guide library lessons?
Library Matters, India overview and purpose:
According to the Early Literacy Standards by the NCERT, a reading corner is essential for building literacy skills, love for reading through engagement with print. Meaningful engagement with literature can be initiated and strengthened by building a space that is inviting and engaging. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations states that the school should have a well -equipped library for its communities and include five books per student.
It should not include examination guides, textbooks in a large space, including a budget that builds the collection to support student literacy and learning. Department of Library and Upper Primary initiates and supports reading programs to support and build literacy among students in both primary and secondary school. "A library is not to be considered as a room full of books but a treasure house. It should be conceived and constructed as a place where children are taken into a wonderful world of books into realms of fantasy, joy, imagination, love, hurt, pain and a plethora of emotions. It should be a place which holds space for both facts and fiction, pleasure and knowledge and into the unimaginable. It should be a place where children can spend hours and transcend boundaries and worlds and then come back to reality with a feeling of being enriched and nourished with new ideas and thoughts. A library should give children an environment which is conducive to the being of the child and the learning processes around them."
The Indian Curriculum states that there is strong evidence that student achievement is significantly higher in schools where a strong library program can support learning and development.
